Automate your business, step by step: where to start

Automation sounds like a huge project. It is not, and treating it like one is why most people never start. Do one thing, prove it, move on.

The word automation makes it sound like a giant, all-at-once project. It is not, and thinking of it that way is exactly why most people stall before they begin. The ones who get real value do the boring version: automate one annoying, repetitive thing, check it actually works, then move to the next. Here is roughly the order I would go in.

Start where the money leaks

Almost always, that is the slow first reply. A fast, useful answer on your busiest channel wins back bookings you are currently letting cool off. Best return, and you feel it straight away.

Then quotes and qualifying

Once replies are instant, hand off the next repetitive job: sending an accurate quote, or asking the couple of questions that tell you whether an enquiry is worth your time, before it lands on you.

Then the follow-ups

Most deals are not lost, they are just never followed up. One well-timed nudge, plus reminders that cut no-shows, quietly brings back money you had already earned.

Last, the admin

Only once the front end is solid does the back office make sense: logging everything to your tools, and a simple monthly report so you can actually see what is happening.

It is the same idea the whole way down. One painful thing at a time, measured, then the next. Start with whatever is costing you most right now, not whatever sounds most impressive.
